Data-Driven Content Strategy: Stop Guessing, Start Measuring
By Author Name
“Create great content” is terrible advice. It’s like telling a chef to “cook great food” — directionally true, operationally useless. What matters is a systematic way to decide what to create.
Start with search, not inspiration
Most content strategies begin with a brainstorming session. Ours begins with search data. What are your target customers actually typing into Google? What questions are they asking on Reddit? What topics are trending in your industry’s niche publications?
We build a keyword universe — typically 200–500 terms clustered into 8–12 topical pillars. Each pillar maps to a business goal: awareness, consideration, conversion, or retention.
The content matrix
Not every piece of content serves the same purpose. We categorize everything we produce into four buckets:
| Type | Goal | Format examples |
|---|---|---|
| Discovery | Attract new audience | SEO articles, social threads, guest posts |
| Proof | Build credibility | Case studies, benchmarks, original research |
| Conversion | Drive action | Product comparisons, ROI calculators, demos |
| Retention | Reduce churn | Tutorials, changelogs, community spotlights |
Measure what matters
Impressions are vanity. Bounce rate tells you more than page views. The metric that actually moves the needle? Assisted conversions — how many people interacted with your content before converting, even if they didn’t convert on the same session.
One of our B2B clients shifted 30% of their ad budget to content in Q1. By Q3, their cost per lead had dropped 41%. Not because content is magic — but because good content does the selling before the sales call ever happens.
